EALD (English as an Additional Language/Dialect) Week 7

What a wonderful long weekend! Whatever you did, I hope that you and your children are feeling relaxed, recharged and refreshed. Many parents have asked me what they can do to support their children at home. Reading still remains one of the most powerful tools to increase vocabulary range, content understanding and writing skills. As well, it can be very entertaining and enjoyable.

Reading is best done together. Read to your child every day. You could choose a novel and read a few pages each time or pick a favourite picture book to read together. Encourage them to read their home reading book to you. Talk about the story. Remember this can be done in your home language or English. It is so important that questions are asked as this helps with improving comprehension.

You might like to use some of these questions to help you ask questions to your child. You do not need to ask all of them.

Here’s an excellent article that I’ve shared in the past about shared reading at home.
