One of the best ways to support your child’s learning at home is through reading. Reading helps build vocabulary, understanding and writing skills, while also being fun and enjoyable. I’ve shared this message on previous occasions but it’s worth reminding that reading is something that every family can do with their child regularly, whether it’s in English or your home language. Â
Try to read with your child every day. You could:Â
- Read a few pages of a novel togetherÂ
- Share a favourite picture bookÂ
- Listen to your child read their home reading bookÂ
Talking about the story is equally important. Asking questions helps improve your child’s comprehension and understanding.
Encourage your child to answer in full sentences where possible and to explain their thinking with extra detail. This helps develop speaking confidence, vocabulary and deeper understanding and comprehension of the text.Â
You can also encourage extended responses by asking follow-up questions such as: Can you tell me more about that? Why do you think that happened? What makes you say that?Â
