At Churchlands Primary School, drama is a vibrant and integral part of the curriculum, providing students with opportunities to develop creativity, communication skills, and social-emotional growth. The program emphasises collaboration, confidence, and critical thinking, encouraging students to explore a variety of dramatic activities such as improvisation, character development, and group performances.
Drama at CPS is designed to be inclusive, with every student, regardless of background or ability, able to engage in and benefit from the program. This reflects the diverse cultural makeup of our school community, where students of various cultural backgrounds, including those with English as an additional language and special needs, are actively supported in their learning. Drama serves as a means for students to connect with different perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Each year, students from across the school participate in a range of engaging drama activities. These include performing monologues, creating characters, and collaborating on improvisation exercises. Students also learn how to use movement, voice, and space to bring stories and emotions to life. In Term 4, Year 3 and 4 students collaborate on performing short plays, where they take on the responsibility of creating costumes, props, and sets, as well as rehearsing in small groups. This provides them with an opportunity to showcase their creativity and teamwork to the school community.
One of the most anticipated events each year is the Year 6 musical production, a culmination of months of preparation and teamwork. The whole school comes together to enjoy the performance, celebrating the students’ dedication and creativity. These performances not only highlight the talents of the Year 6 students but also foster a sense of unity and school spirit.
Drama at CPS goes beyond the stage, playing a significant role in students’ personal development. It nurtures important life skills such as resilience, empathy, and respect, empowering students to confidently express themselves and connect with others. This program complements the broader curriculum, contributing to a well-rounded educational experience that prepares students for success in all areas of life.
