At Churchlands Primary School, the music program, led by full-time Level 3 music specialist Michael Howesmith, plays a central role in fostering creativity and enriching the student learning experience. Michael’s hands-on, child-centred teaching approach inspires students, particularly through the annual Music Team, a group of Year 6 musicians who demonstrate leadership through their involvement in school performances and events.
In general music classes, students explore the essential elements of music through interactive workshops. Activities include singing, rhythm exercises, and performances using a variety of instruments, such as xylophones, keyboards, recorders, and ukuleles. Additionally, students compose music to suit characters or scenes, providing a practical and dynamic approach to their learning.
Technology is seamlessly integrated into the curriculum, allowing students to utilise iPads and online music programs to enhance their learning experience. This technology also supports the coordination of school-wide ensembles, including the school’s orchestra and choir.
The Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) program adds significant value to the music program by offering students from Year 3 to Year 6 the opportunity to learn various instruments. The instruments offered through IMSS include:
- Violin
- Viola
- Cello
- Double Bass
- Trumpet
- Trombone
- Baritone Horn
- Clarinet
- Flute
The program also supports a range of ensembles, such as the Music Team Band and the VOICE Senior Choir. The VOICE Senior Choir performs complex three-part songs at major events, including the ANZAC Ceremony and the Children Make Music Concert at Crown Theatre.
The school’s musical achievements are showcased in events like the Big Music Night (BMN), the CHUMT Show, and the Churchlands Primary String Orchestra’s performance at the ABODA Junior Orchestra Festival, all of which highlight the extraordinary musical talent at CPS.
