At Churchlands Primary School, Physical Education plays a vital role in developing students’ physical skills, resilience, and lifelong appreciation for active living. Our inclusive program is designed to support students of all abilities through engaging, game-based learning that aligns with our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) values: Respect, Resilience, Engage, and Excel.
For younger students, the program emphasizes fundamental movement skills, including throwing, catching, striking, and kicking. These activities not only enhance motor development but also instill values of teamwork and mutual respect. For older students, the focus shifts towards advanced gameplay strategies, decision-making under pressure, and fostering spatial awareness, helping them grow as individuals and team players.
Our program thrives on a rich array of activities and events:
- In-School Sporting Activities: Weekly running clubs encourage students to challenge themselves while fostering a love for personal fitness.
- Community Collaboration: Partnerships with external sporting programs bring expert coaching and variety to students’ physical education experiences.
- Carnivals and Competitions: Annual swimming, athletics, cross-country, and tennis carnivals are highly anticipated events, offering opportunities for personal achievement and team camaraderie.
- Interschool Participation: Students proudly represent Churchlands in netball, soccer, AFL, and other interschool sports, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship on a larger stage.
- Tennis Excellence: The City Beach Tennis Red Ball Smash has been a highlight, generating enthusiasm and increased participation in tennis throughout the school community.
The program’s success is evident in the positive shift in students’ mindsets. Senior students, in particular, have embraced leadership opportunities and demonstrated an increased focus on the joy of learning and active participation, moving beyond outcome-oriented goals. These values are also reflected in the exemplary role models among our senior cohort, who embody the ‘Churchlands Way’ during school events.
Recognizing the national challenge of declining youth physical activity, Churchlands is committed to expanding opportunities for students to stay active. Plans for additional before and after-school programs aim to encourage independence and intrinsic motivation to remain physically active, nurturing lifelong healthy habits.
By emphasising participation, personal growth, and community connection, the Physical Education program at Churchlands Primary equips students with the skills, mindset, and values to lead active and fulfilling lives.
