Jumping into colour, line and texture, Term two
Focusing on portraits, Year One and Two classes began drawing fluffy Western Australian Marsupial. Each class of young creatives used observed drawing techniques from photos of either quokkas, Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats or Western Brush Wallabies. They added small crosshatching lines or dashes to suggest the fur covering. The animal’s character is ready shining through with our junior
Yummo! Year three and four classes are focusing on the pop art paintings of Wayne Thiebald’s cakes and doughnuts. The young artists have started their startling mixed media backgrounds for their delicious popular confectionery.
Year five and six creatives looked at large paintings by American modern artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. Her Poppy painting became their study as they filled pages with their own Poppy drawing. Using oil pastels, they blended and moved warm colours together to emphasise depth and create a sense of three dimensions.
Wednesday 22 April was the 56th annual UNICEF Earth Day with the theme,” Our Power, Our Planet”. With this spirit, Wednesday classes created Earth Day art.
Room 9 created posters. The class recognised how our school’s awareness and actions. The thoughtful posters are displayed outside room 9 and around the school, sharing the message, every small action, reducing waste, saving energy, and caring for our environment creates a big impact for the future. World Earth Day is not just a celebration, but a reminder that we all play an important role. So proud of these guys.
Room 2 and ECE1 looked at a photograph of our planet from the NASA space station, and using finger painting techniques created their version of our healthy planet.
Post Doodle Bug competition/Shaun Tan Awards
With pride, I share the success enjoyed by several students entering drawings, prompted from the Doodle Bug Competition in the Post newspaper’s children section. Thank you, Nina and Signe for sharing your win. I love hearing about our art successes.
Fabulous artists, it’s time to get super creative. Entries open Friday April 24 and close on Monday 18 May. for the Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists. The City of Subiaco’s art award is inviting budding young artists from Years 1 to 12 to enter a unique and original painting or drawing into the competition. For details go to Subiaco.wa.gov.au and search ‘community awards”.

Revealed 2026, New and Emerging WA Aboriginal Artists Apr-Jun AACHWA
Last Friday night I attended the Opening night of the 2026 Revealed exhibition, featuring more than 185 artworks by over 100 First Nation artists, representing 27 WA Aboriginal art centres, plus 10 independent artists. This diverse exhibition was curated by Zali Morgan, a Whadjuk, Balladong and Wilman Noongar woman. I would recommend going to view the biggest celebration of Aboriginal art exhibited at Perth Institute Contemporary Arts (PICA)s. It’s running from 18 April to 14 June 2026.
