Today, the Churchlands Primary School community came together for a fun and meaningful cause, thanks to the initiative of our Year 6 Student Councillors. Students were invited to come in free dress and bring along a gold coin donation to support our ongoing partnership with Solar Buddy — a program making a real difference in the lives of children around the world.
From superheroes and sports stars to onesies and wild hair, the creativity on display brought colour and excitement to our school grounds. Behind the fun, however, was a strong message of global citizenship and compassion.
The Solar Buddy program is a not-for-profit initiative aimed at ending energy poverty through education and sustainable technology. The organisation provides solar-powered lights to children living in remote and disadvantaged communities who often rely on dangerous and toxic kerosene lamps, or have no access to lighting at all. These lights help students study safely after dark, supporting their learning and future opportunities.
As part of the program, our students also learn about global inequality and the importance of sustainable solutions. By raising funds and assembling the solar lights themselves, Churchlands students are empowered to become change-makers and understand the real-world impact of their actions.
We are proud of our Year 6 Student Councillors for leading this initiative and grateful to all families who supported the cause. It was a wonderful reminder that with a little creativity and a lot of heart, our school community can make a bright difference in the world.
