In our busy world, one simple habit continues to stand out: reading with your child. It doesn’t need to be complicated or time-consuming, just consistent. A few minutes each day can make a meaningful difference to how your child understands language and the world around them, plus make progress with their English skills. Â
When your child is reading, encourage them to read the text in English, but don’t feel limited to sticking only to English when you talk about it. Discussing the story in your home language can actually deepen understanding and your child make stronger connections with the story.Â
There’s no need to rush through books or move on too quickly. Children often love hearing the same story again and again. That’s a good thing! Each time they revisit a familiar book, they’re building confidence, recognising words more easily, and noticing new details they may have missed before.Â
Talking about the story together is where so much learning happens. You can wonder aloud about the characters, look closely at the pictures, and chat about what might happen next. Ask questions like, “How do you think they’re feeling?” or “What would you do if you were in that situation?”Â
Most importantly, keep it relaxed and enjoyable. These conversations aren’t about getting the right answer—they’re about building understanding, skills, confidence, and a love of stories.Â
