At Churchlands Primary, we are learning what it means to take responsibility for our actions—both in the classroom and in the playground. This week, our PBS focus is “We are responsible for our own behaviour.”
How you can support at home:
- Talk about choices: Ask your child about a time they made a good choice at school and how it made them feel.
- Model responsibility: Share examples of how you take responsibility in your day-to-day life (e.g. apologising when you make a mistake, following through on commitments).
- Use positive language: Reinforce the idea that mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow.
- Praise responsibility: Celebrate when your child shows responsibility, like packing their bag, owning up to a mistake, or helping without being asked.
Home Activities to Support Responsibility
- “What Would You Do?” Scenarios
Create short, everyday situations and ask your child how they would respond responsibly.
Example:
- “You forgot your homework. What can you do to take responsibility?”
- “You accidentally broke something. What should you do next?”
- Responsibility Chart
Make a weekly chart with your child that includes tasks like:
- Packing their school bag
- Tidying their room
- Feeding a pet
Tick off each task and celebrate their efforts at the end of the week.
- “Own It” Moments
At dinner or bedtime, ask:
- “Did you have a moment today where you took responsibility?”
- “Was there a time you could have made a better choice?”
This builds reflection and accountability in a safe space.
- Role Play
Act out common school or home situations where your child can practise making responsible choices.
Example: Pretend a sibling takes their toy—how can they respond calmly and responsibly?
- Praise the Process
Catch your child being responsible and name it:
- “I noticed you cleaned up without being asked—that’s taking responsibility!”
