At Churchlands Primary, we are learning how to be active participants in our learning and respectful members of our school community. This fortnight, our PBS focus is “We listen and follow instructions” and “We accept mistakes and learn from them.”
How you can support at home:
Encourage active listening:
Ask your child to repeat back instructions to check understanding. Praise them when they listen carefully and follow through.
- Talk about learning from mistakes:
Share a time when you made a mistake and what you learned from it. Reinforce that mistakes are a normal part of learning.
- Model respectful behaviour:
Show how you listen attentively to others and follow through on directions, whether at home or in public.
- Celebrate effort and growth:
Focus on progress rather than perfection. Praise your child for trying, even if they didn’t get it right the first time.
Home Activities to Support Listening and Learning from Mistakes
- “Simon Says” Listening Game
Play a fun game of Simon Says to practise listening carefully and following instructions.
- Instruction Relay
Give your child a series of simple tasks (e.g. “Put your shoes away, then feed the dog”) and see how well they follow the sequence.
- Mistake Moments Journal
Create a small journal where your child can write or draw a mistake they made and what they learned from it. Reflect together at the end of the week.
- Role Play Scenarios
Act out situations where listening and learning from mistakes are important.
Example: “You didn’t hear the teacher’s instructions—what can you do next time?”
Or: “You spilled your drink—how can you fix it and learn from it?”
- Praise Listening and Learning
Catch your child in the moment:
“I saw you stop and listen before crossing the road, that’s great listening!”
“You kept trying even after making a mistake, that’s how we learn!”
