Robocup Jr 2025
Well the Robocup Jr has wrapped up again for another year, with our 2025 competing teams doing themselves and Churchlands PS extremely proud over the weekend at the Robocup Jr at ECE Mt Lawley.
This year, we had two year 6 teams entered, with one group of four boys entering the extremely competitive Rescue Line Challenge, and a another team of two entering the daunting Lightweight Soccer Tournament, which was anything but lightweight!
The Line Rescue boys, Lucas Y Z, Lachlan P and August K, led by Lucas Z, were our most hopeful team for this particular event since CPS first represented over 5 years ago. Lucas was a huge inclusion to the team, coming in from the highly successful Willeton Robot Club previously, bringing extensive knowledge and experience in robotics. The boys have been developing and training for the event for over 6 months this year, meeting weekly afterschool as well as a lot of time spent at home, honing and refining their programming and builds to make sure their robot could navigate the many presented challenges of the task.
As expected they performed exemplary at the event, crusing through qualifying rounds without hardly losing any points. By after lunch on Sunday, they topped all 25 or so schools, leading into the final showdown. It must be noted that this was the very first time CPS team made it through to the second day of competition, let alone the final showdown – a feat that cannot be replicated.
Unfortunately after dominant performances up to then, the boy’s luck did not hold out and due to a couple of technical misshaps, they ended the showdown in third place. Congratulations boys, on not only making history for CPS, but for all your dedication and hard work you endured on your journey towards the cup. It was fantastic to see you all so invested and work together to get an unbelievable result, one that will be hard to be match in future years. Congratulations boys.
Isaac M and Will S worked equally as hard throughout the year in preparation for the Lightweight Soccer division tournament. We found out that the lightweight division, was anything but as it included teams from high schools across the city that had the advantage of years of experience. Despite the challenging circumstances the boys competed admirably, and after an intimidating start against the reigning national champions (no team scored against them the entire competition!), their final matches were a lot closer, with multiple goals scored.
At the end of the day, they didn’t manage to place, however they should be extremely proud of themselves for the fantastic positive attitude and persistence demonstrated over the weekend.
Well done to all the boys, it was personally so pleasing to see so much growth in programming, problem solving, focus and attitude – and at the end of the day, a lot of fun was had. It is a shame we cannot build on that experience next year, however I wish you all the best at your respective high schools and encourage you to continue to develop those important life-long skills there.
Coder Dojo Term 4
We now look to the new crop of programmers, with Term 4 Coder Dojo classes open to all year 3 & 4 students. If your child is in year 3 or 4 and is interested in doing some programming with like-minded students on a Wednesday after school, please register your interest through the link below. Classes will begin, week 1 of Term 4.
