STEAM/Science Week
This week the nation celebrated National Science week, with the theme being ‘Seeds of Science – Nurturing Knowledge for All’, and Churchlands engaged with our annual STEAM Week program that celebrates this and the many other aspects of STEM learning.
While classrooms have been working extremely hard all term integrating special steam projects to apply this science knowledge and undertanding, we also hosted a range of engaging and fun challenges for our students to get their hands dirty!
Recently, due to the ongoing success of our ongoing Keen2STEAM interschool event in term 1, we have framed our STEAM week challenges to support the development of our student’s knowledge in a friendly competitive environment based around faction competition. This added level of engagement allows students to not only work hard for individual and team-based success, but also activates the team first mentality when applying solution based challenges under pressure.
Events included science based quizzes, science sounds, nature exploration and the annual CPS Engineering Challnege – which forms the qualification process for students aiming to represent the school at the term 4 Scitech Challenge days.
As per normal, participating numbers where outstanding, with a full undercover area on all days of the competition. Congratulations to all students involved and check our our placewinners in the results below. As promised I have also provied the answers to the quizzes and points awarded for the Engineering Challenge. Congratulations to Cowan, who took out the CPS STEAM Faction Challenge trophy for the very first time, ending Forrest’s dominance over the first two years.
Finally, thanks again to Dr Bruce Webber who ended the week with another engaging presentation to the school on the science week theme. We really appreciate and feel so lucky to have such a great working partnership with Dr Bruce (Yes a proper sciencist and professor with the UWA and Bush Heritage Foundation!) who offers deep scientific knowledge in an engaging and consumable way for all ages. Thanks again Dr Bruce!!

Robocup Jr
This weekend, our Year 5 & 6 competitors will battle it out in the 2026 WA State Robocup Jr, taking part in either the soccor or maze rescue divisions. The students have been working extremely hard all year, preparing their robots, code and resilience to be ready for the rigorous testing on the weekend. While it is a competitive format, and all students are out to win the silverwear, it’s also a very friendly and safe environment where collaboration and learning from one-another is deemed just as important. While each teams have adult mentors to support their readiness, all work is completed by students alone, and on the day they are not permitted any guidance or help – they aren’t even allowed to talk to the mentors when competing!
The teams are ultra-excited and ready to go, and we are all looking forward to the challenge at Murdoch University! We will share how we go after the event!

Coder Dojo Semester 2
Finally, with completion of the Robocup Jr competition this weekend, marks the end of the Senior Coder Dojo prorgam. That means that for the rest of the year, the after school robotics session will be for studnets in years 3 & 4.
