EALD NEWS – English as an Additional Language or Dialect

Welcome to the 2024 school year! I hope that your holidays were a wonderful mix of adventure and relaxation, but most importantly quality time with your family.

Churchlands Primary School is a culturally and linguistically diverse community. Our EALD program supports students with developing their Standard Australian English (SAE) skills and confidence so that they can successfully access the content of the Western Australian Curriculum.

Students who meet specific criteria (such as language background information your family provided upon enrolment, on-entry data, English grades and Progress Map levels) are eligible for extra support or monitoring. These eligible students are recorded on our EALD student census which is updated twice a year.

I am currently looking at our school data to determine eligible students for our 2024 EALD census. Some students may need explicit small group instruction and support, while others are checked in and monitored during their class. Eligible students on our semester one census will receive a note home in coming weeks.

A shared support approach at home is also encouraged to maximise student progress and confidence at school. Make sure you regularly check school communication through Seesaw and Audiri, as well as the website for strategies and keeping up to date with school information and events. Click the Learning tab on the website and select EALD – you will see previous messages from me as well as some translated documents which may be helpful.

Happy reading! And early wishes for a very happy Lunar New Year too!
